Wright frustrated at ‘sad’ Ozil fallout, as he pens strong Arsenal message

Date published: Wednesday 21st October 2020 4:31

Ian Wright says he feels puzzled as to why Arsenal and Mesut Ozil could not resolve the issues that have led to the midfielder’s snub.

Ozil will only be able to play Under-23s football from now on, after he did not earn a place in Arsenal‘s Premier League squad.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta’s decision is the final nail in the German’s coffin at the Emirates Stadium. Indeed last week, Arteta did not name Ozil in his squad for the Europa League.

Ozil released a statement on social media venting his frustrations at the situation. The 32-year-old claimed he felt Arsenal had not “reciprocated” his loyalty to the club.

Sharing his viewpoint, Gunners legend Wright offered an emotional message to the player.

“Football will never stop surprising me,” he wrote on Twitter (via the Daily Express). “The fact that whatever has gone on couldn’t be resolved between the club & Mesut is sad.

“Sad for everyone involved and I can only send him strength for what will be a difficult few months knowing he won’t even have a chance to play. Gutted.”

Ozil’s struggles for game time are not a thing of recent times, however. Indeed the midfielder was never truly in the limelight under Arteta’s predecessor Unai Emery.

However after Emery’s departure, interim boss Freddie Ljungberg restored him to his lineup. And that trend continued, with Ozil featuring in the first 10 Premier League games of Arteta’s reign.

But he has not played since the coronavirus pandemic halted last season’s action in March.

Arteta‘s decision came as he also cut defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from his squad. The Premier League only allows for 17 homegrown players, with Arsenal’s tally at 19.

As such, the Spanish manager had a tough decision to make.

Houssem Aouar

Meanwhile, reports in Spain claim that Arsenal are preparing to make another bid for Houssem Aouar.

The Gunners chased the Lyon star in the recent transfer window but did not meet the Ligue 1 side’s valuation.

However, Don Balon says that Arsenal will ‘go with everything’ in January to bring him to the Emirates Stadium.
