U.S. Congressional Demographics

Below is an interesting graphic that shows that the demographics of the U.S. population at large much more closely resembles those of congressional Democrats than those of the Republicans.  How is it possible, then, that the U.S. Senate features a GOP majority?  Money, my friend.  The average victorious Senator spends well over $10 million on his campaign, and that kind of cash comes almost exclusively from wealthy donors, rather than from grass roots campaigns tapping the common American.

Environmental Terrorism

The American Energy Society reports the following recent cases of terrorism associated with the oil industry’s infrastructure:• Syria. The Arab Gas Pipeline between the Syrian towns of Ad Dumayr and Adra exploded, and the attack has been attributed “almost certainly” to ISIS. • Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco is preparing for another attack on its oil production facilities by Houthi rebels, especially within 50 miles of the border of Yemen.• Mozambique. A terrorist organization probably aligned with the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks in the supergiant Rovuma Basin, a 180 trillion cubic feet natural gas reserve (or, 29 billion barrels of oil) offshore of Mozambique. (Editor’s note: the identity of the terrorists responsible for the attacks have not been confirmed,...

Women for Trump Are Some Real Pearls

I don’t do “body shaming,” so I won’t comment on how this woman looks, beyond saying that I physically recoiled when I laid eyes on this.I do want to mention, however, how utterly revolting some of these people are in ways that transcend their lack of physical attractiveness.

Guest post: How climate change is turning glaciers into lakes

Lakes formed by melting glaciers around the world have increased in size by 50% over the past 30 years.  That is the main finding of our new study, published in Nature Climate Change, which provides yet another sign of a warming climate – and one that affects water supplies and flood risk for billions of people. Glacier melting in recent decades has led to a dramatic increase in the size and number of glacial lakes. These form behind natural dams created by debris pushed along at the front of glaciers and left behind as glacier fronts retreat. Until now there has been no global assessment of the number of glacial lakes, nor of how they have changed over time.   However, “big data” cloud computing now lets us use automated mapping with vast archives of satellite imagery. ...

How Smart Is the Smart Flower?

The photoshopped image here features the “Smart Flower,” a solar PV device tracks the sun through the sky, then (for some reason) folds up at night, only to unfold the next morning. How do I know it’s photshopped? Let’s do the math associated with its costs, and the answer will become obvious. The manufacturer says that average installation is $27K, but there is a 30% investment tax credit (ITC), so that means it’s really $18.9K.  The warranty of the system is two years, but let’s assume that, by some miracle, the system is still operational when the warranty of the PV itself runs out in 25 years. You plunk down your $18.9, and eat the opportunity cost of that money, say 5% per year, for 25 years. So you costs over 25 years are $18.9K * (1.05)25, or $64K.  You’ll save (depending on where you a...

Political Polls Suddenly All “Bogus”

Here’s Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), asking for donations to “Help us FIGHT BACK against these bogus polls!”  A couple of questions:If they’re bogus, who cares?  Doesn’t what matter what happens in the voting booth? How is it possible that things like the Gallup Pool that got it’s start in 1935, honest and reliable over the last 85 years, are now dishonest and “bogus,” now that Donald Trump is running for re-election?  Does that seem a bit strange?Btw, the Gallup Pool has Biden ahead nationally by 12.2%, the precise amount as the other 8 – 10 majors. Seems like a hell of a coincidence that every single one of these has gone “bogus”–at the exact same time.

Losing Social Security Due To Permanent Cuts in Payroll Taxes Doesn’t Bother Me a Bit

There must be Trump supporters my exact age, looking at this and thinking:Well, look. I worked hard all my life and paid into Social Security, which was taken out of every paycheck I earned from the time I got my first job at 14 till I just turned 65.  But I believe in capitalism.  If it makes billionaires richer, I’d be happy to eat rice and beans for the rest of my life, and stay holed up inside my cheap little house, unable to afford travel.  And I’m goddamn sure my wife feels the same way. We’re real patriots, and this is the American thing to do.Just keep people with dark skin out of our beautiful country, and you got yourself a deal.

Just Like Trump, McConnell Will Be Remembered as a Traitor

In a speech before the RNC, Senate Majority Leader McConnell pitched Republican control of the Senate as a “firewall” against House Democrats’ legislative aims. One of those aims, of course, is the different sorts of proposed legislation that would have made it harder for Russia to help Trump win the presidential election in 2020, just like all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies report that they did in 2016.It’s all but certain that history will view McConnell’s most amazing achievement as the blocking all all attempts to prevent election hacking by Russia and other foreign entities, handing control of our government to an enemy power.

From the American Energy Society: “Geothermal Energy Is Surging—Battered Oil and Gas Companies Should Take Advantage”

Here’s an article co-written by my colleague Jigar Shah, suggesting that geothermal has a promising future; he believes that this is due in part to the availability of resources recently make available by the downturn in the oil industry.   It begins:Big Oil came into 2020 with big promises: big drops in greenhouse gas emissions, big investments in carbon-capture technology, big steps to make oil and gas a viable part of the global effort to slow climate change.Like so many of the industry’s ambitious claims over the years, the efforts have proved to be little more than a glossy public relations fantasy — and the sector’s supposedly solid market fundamentals were exposed to be as flimsy as Hollywood set-dressing.The piece continues on, making the point at that many of these unemployed oil ...
