Silva reveals shock after training ground chat with Chelsea standby Cech

Date published: Wednesday 21st October 2020 3:48 Chelsea defender Thiago Silva says he did not expect to hear that Petr Cech was making himself available for Premier League action. Blues boss Frank Lampard has drafted his former teammate into his 25-man top-flight squad this season. Lampard made the decision to ease the potential crisis if Covid-19 means his current wealth of stoppers is diminished. Indeed Cech, 38, makes the move back to the training field from the Chelsea boardroom. Despite admitting surprise at the move, Silva insists that after chatting with Cech, the goalkeeper is ready for action should Lampard need him to play. “He’s a guy that we don’t have to discard. His story is very beautiful in football,” Silva told...

Man Utd committed to ´making the English game stronger´ as annual revenue drops

Ed Woodward revealed Manchester United are committed to “playing a constructive role in helping the wider football pyramid” as the club revealed the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.  United announced results for the 2019-20 financial year on Wednesday, including a £70million drop in revenue as it counts the cost of the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.  The club posted total revenue of £509m, a significant dip on the initial forecast of £560m-£580m. It comes a year on from a record £627.1m figure, albeit a drop was always expected without Champions League football.  Net debt has risen to £474.1m, an increase of £270.5m over the course of the year, as broadcasting revenue dropped to £140.2m.  United’s commercial ...

Celtic eye Preston North End left-back Ben Davies

Celtic are interested in signing Ben Davies from Preston North End in the January transfer window, according to Football Insider. It has been reported that the Glasgow giants wanted to sign Davies in the summer transfer window, having identified him as a potential replacement for Kristoffer Ajer. Although no move materialised before the window closes earlier this month, Celtic are reportedly still keen on the 25-year-old left-back and are working on a deal to bring him to Celtic Park in January. Davies, who can also operate as a central defender, is out of contract at Preston at the end of the season, but the Championship club in England are trying to convince him to put pen to paper on a new deal. According to WhoScored, D...

Liverpool ‘unlikely’ to sign Virgil van Dijk cover – but injury “worse than initially feared”

Virgil van Dijk‘s knee injury is said to be “worse than initially feared,” and despite ruling him out for the rest of the season, Liverpool may not sign another centre-back. On Sunday, the club confirmed that Van Dijk had suffered damage to his knee ligaments and would require surgery, with no timeframe on the Dutchman’s return to action. It is a devastating blow for the Reds, particularly given Joel Matip is also now sidelined for their Champions League opener at Ajax, leaving Joe Gomez as the only specialist senior centre-back. Van Dijk is not expected to feature for the rest of the season, though sources within Liverpool remained hopeful that he could still return to action in some capacity before the campaign was up. Now, though, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has claimed that the in...

Opinion: Reason for Petr Cech’s squad inclusion much deeper than ‘unprecedented conditions’

Petr Cech is arguably the greatest goalkeeper in Chelsea history, winning 13 major honours I’ll admit, the reasoning given by Chelsea for bringing 38-year old technical director Petr Cech out of retirement are pretty convincing. With the ‘unprecedented conditions’ of the current Covid-19 crisis, Chelsea have added Cech to their 25-man squad for this season as ’emergency goalkeeper cover’. ‘Petr Cech has been included in the squad as emergency goalkeeper cover. This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis. He takes up a position as a non-contract player’. #cfc — Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) October 20, 2020 Whilst a wise move, due to the possibility of one, two, or all three of ...

Didi Hamann warns Liverpool Jurgen Klopp is heading for the beach

Date published: Wednesday 21st October 2020 2:19 Dietmar Hamann has warned Liverpool that Jurgen Klopp will either be “lying on the beach or he will be the coach of the German national team” by 2025. The former Reds midfielder says Klopp has become a “living legend” at Anfield and it’s hard to disagree. The German coach guided Liverpool to their first top-flight title in 30 years last season, obliterating the competition on their way. The season before Klopp’s side won the Champions League and he has helped turn the club into one of the world’s greatest teams. After arriving in October 2015, the 53-year-old had shown enough progression to win a new six-year deal in July 2016. He then extended that further in December 2019 until ...

Report claims Solskjaer is covering for Greenwood absence, amid deeper Man Utd concerns

Date published: Wednesday 21st October 2020 3:01 Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly protecting striker Mason Greenwood with his comments, amid a concerning lack of punctuality. Greenwood was not in the squad for Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Indeed that is the second game in a row Solskjaer that has left him out of his plans. Asked about whether the omissions were due to disciplinary matters in Monday’s press conference, Solskjaer took issue. The coach insisted that Greenwood has a “niggle”, but refused to give details of the injury to the waiting press. However, according to the Daily Mail, Solskjaer is covering for Greenwood’s deeper issues. The 19-year-old has reportedly ‘...

Leicestershire Live state that the 24-year-old has not been given a place in Brendan Rodgers’ European plans amid uncertainty over his future. Currently in the final year of his contract, Gray was linked to a move to Leeds United before the transfer window shut having not signed a new deal due to assurances about his game time. The Mirror reported that the switch would have cost around £20million but any potential agreement failed to materialise before deadline day earlier this month. Now, the Premier League winner has been left out of ...
